MACHINE SHOP SAFETY RULES

Safety Glasses Think First The most important thing in the workshop is SAFETY! Your personal safety ultimately rests with YOURSELF and your actions! Work in a responsible manner following the safety instructions given to you by the instructor.

GENERAL SHOP SAFETY RULES

  1. ALWAYS wear safety glasses.
  2. Tie back long hair.
  3. Do not wear loose clothing. Tuck in shirts, and roll up sleeves.
  4. No horseplay.
  5. Do not wear sandals.
  6. Keep machines and work areas clean and free of oil and metal chips.
  7. Do not leave tools lying around. Return them to their storage spot when done.
  8. Keep tools clean and free of oil.
  9. Never leave a machine until it is completely stopped.
  10. Do not tamper with machines.
  11. Do not lean on running machines
  12. Do not wear gloves when operating machine tools.
  13. Do not wear rings or loose jewellery. Remove them and stick them into your pockets.
  14. Do not attempt to operate any machine until you are familiar with the controls and safety precautions.
  15. Do not talk to, or distract, someone who is operating a machine.
  16. Everybody helps with general clean-up at the end of the period.



DRILL PRESS SAFETY

  1. ALWAYS wear safety glasses.
  2. Never wear any loose clothing around a machine.
  3. Tie back long hair.
  4. No jewellery or watches.
  5. Never change the speeds until the machine is completely stopped.
  6. Make sure that the drive belt guard is in place.
  7. Keep the work table and work area clean.
  8. Never leave a chuck key in the chuck.
  9. Always use a brush to remove chips. Never your hands as the metal chips are sharp.
  10. Do not wear work gloves. They can get caught.
  11. Clamp all work securely to the table.
  12. Ease up on drilling pressure as the bit breaks through the material.
  13. Always file and remove burrs from freshly drilled material.




ENGINE LATHE SAFETY

  1. Always wear safety glasses.
  2. Do not run the lathe until you are familiar with the controls and hazards.
  3. No loose clothing, rings, or watches.
  4. Stop the lathe before taking any measurements.
  5. Use a brush to remove metal chips, never use compressed air.
  6. Shut off power before mounting or removing workpiece.
  7. Do not attempt to remove to much material at a pass. (Especially on thin diameters).
  8. Do not lean on the machine. Stand clear.
  9. Keep the lathe clean and clear of tools. Keep floor clear of oil and metal chips.
  10. Double check that workpiece and tool setup is tight and secure.
  11. NEVER LEAVE A CHUCK KEY IN THE CHUCK




MILLING MACHINE SAFETY

  1. Be sure that the work and cutter are mounted securely before taking a cut.
  2. ALWAYS wear safety glasses.
  3. When mounting or removing milling cutters, use a rag to avoid getting cut.
  4. When measuring, move the table (and your work) well clear of the milling cutter.
  5. Never attempt to make any adjustments or measurements to the workpiece set-up until the milling machine is completely stopped.
  6. Keep hands, brushes, and rags away from the milling cutter at all times.
  7. Do not attempt to remove to much material in one pass.
  8. Always use a brush to clean the work and machine, never compressed air nor a rag.
  9. Never move your hands near to a revolving cutter. The only guard on this machine is your brain.
  10. Keep the work area clean of oil and metal chips, as well as tools.




CNC MILLING MACHINE SAFETY

  1. ALWAYS wear safety glasses.
  2. Keep hands and fingers well away from the milling cutter.
  3. Check that the milling cutter is tight in the chuck. Use the proper allen wrench.
  4. Keep the work area clean and clear of tools and debris.
  5. Check that the spindle lock is removed before operating the machine.
  6. Do not attempt to remove too much material at one pass. Use only soft materials for work pieces.
  7. Know where the Emergency Stop button is.
  8. Make sure that the workpiece is secure in the vice.
  9. Make sure that the workpiece size is within the limits of your CNC program.
  10. Replace wooden block rest under the cutter head before shutting off the power.
